Brynithel RFC vs Magor RFC

Saturday 14 March 2026 K.O.14:30

Mount pleasant estate, brynithel.

brynithel RFC 10 – 27 Magor RFC

It was Super Saturday in the six nations and this usually means no league games but Magor added to the spice of the day with an away fixture at Brynithel and a 12 noon kick off. Getting back to winning ways was essential and Magor didn’t disappoint with a pleasing win 10 – 27. Two tries from Captain Ellis Wainwright, a try from Morgan Davies and two penalties from Ross Speirs made the game safe. Fly half and Captain, Wainwright later said “Couldn’t be more proud of every single one of the boys. The forwards should take a bow because the platform they created for us backs was outstanding”

Seems like it is not only Wales who have a two try scoring Wainwrights in their ranks!

Magor scored first with a Ross Speirs penalty which Brynithel quickly cancelled out with a penalty of their own. Just five minutes later though, Morgan Davies scored Magor’s first of the day. A lineout on the left wing was driven up by the forwards almost all the way but smartly, the boys decided to use the backs and simple rugby, making the ball do the work, put Morgan in the right corner. The tricky conversion was easily slotted over by Ross Speirs and the confidence seemed to grow.

The Magor pack were totally dominant in the scrum, Rhys Delap giving his opponent a lesson in scrummaging and, sure enough, a rapidly retreating Brynithel scrum gave Ross Speirs the opportunity of three more point from the resulting penalty which he duly slotted over.

Magor kept pressing and, again, Bynithel’s discipline let them down, giving away another penalty but this time the ball went wide of the posts. However, the points kept coming. Another totally dominant scrum inside Brynithel’s 22 was picked up by Tom Cousins and almost taken over but quick ball from scrum half Mogan Tyler fed Ross Speirs who swiftly put captain Ellis Wainwright in for his first of the day under the posts and Ross then put the conversion over for a very healthy 3 – 20 lead going in to half time.

This is how the score stayed until about 15 minutes into the second half when Brynithel got one back which they converted to bring the score up to 10 – 20. However, the game was finally put to bed 10 minutes before the end. Another huge scrum over on the right in the Brynithel 22 gave more good possession to the backs who swiftly sent the ball across the pitch with replacement full back Matt Doddridge running well and Morgan Tyler almost making it to the line. Another penalty was the result and Ellis Wainwright crossed for his second with Matt Doddridge putting the conversion over and effectively sealing the victory.

Brynithel lost their heads a little and their prop saw red in the form of a card and this was after their touch judge had also been “sent off”.

Nice to get back to winning ways! Special shout out to our special guests David Downes, Anthony Leach, Kian Dugmore and, of course, our old boy Tom Cousins.

Magor RFC vs St. Julian’s HSOB RFC

Saturday 20 December 2025 K.O.14:30

Caldicot Leisure Centre, Caldicot.

Magor RFC 7 – 35 St. Julian’s HSOB RFC

The Christmas season is all about local rugby derbies of course and for Magor this means a match against our nearest Division 6 rivals, St. Julian’s HSOB. This is a team where geography is not the only link with some of the Magor team previous St. Julian’s players and our own chairman, Jerry Evans, a St. Julian’s old boy.

It was an important match with both teams at the top end of the table and looking for one of the two promotion spots. After a scoreless first 5 minutes, it was St. Julian’s who struck first with a penalty and 10 minutes later followed up with a try on the left wing. The try went unconverted giving St. Julian’s an eight point lead. It was a carbon copy just about five minutes later with another try for the left wing who raced into the corner from around halfway. Again the kick was unsuccessful but St. Julian’s were stretching ahead. This is how the half ended Magor 0 – 13 St. Julian’s.

Magor cut the deficit to just 6 early in the second half. A penalty was taken quickly by Iestyn Rollings on the St. Julian’s 10m line and, as four defenders closed in on him, he gave the try scoring pass to Ross Speirs who stumbled over the line for the try. Ross then converted his own try to make it Magor 7 – 13 St. Julian’s. The Magor pack was definitely on top at scrum time with every single scrum going Magor’s way but unfortunately we weren’t able to take advantage as not a single penalty came our way as a result of any scrums.

They say it’s the hope that kills you and maybe this is true because hopes were high at this point but St. Julian’s really found another gear from here. The St. Julian’s backs really found their form and ran in another four tries, almost exclusively in the corners meaning that the tricky conversions were missed. That is all except the last try which, it has to be said, was pretty good. Starting on their own 5m line, St. Julian’s were able to run almost the entire length of the right wing and then spread the ball across the field to cross the line on the left but smartly run under the posts to make the conversions a bit easier for their kicker who duly obliged finishing the game Magor 7 – 35 St. Julian’s.

Congratulations to Ashley Maskell who came on for his debut in the Magor black and amber.

This leaves Division 6 East with three teams on top all with 20 points namely Penallta Athletic, St. Julian’s HSOB and Magor and with New Tredegar hot on everyone’s heels on 18 points with a game in hand. Still everything to play for in this league!

We would also like to give a special word of thanks to our very young referee Harri Winstone, at just 16 years of age, good to see young referees coming through – No Ref, No Game, Diolch Harri.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone associated with Magor RFC at all levels and here’s to a successful 2026.

Girling RFC vs Magor RFC

Saturday 13 December 2025 K.O.14:30

Lucas Girling Sports Ground, Cwmbrân.

Girling RFC 28 – 30 Magor RFC

With Christmas on its way, this game was all about cards but it was a game most welcome after an eight week break from league action.

This was a game that Magor expected to win having taken the spoils at home earlier in the season but it was Girling who started the game with the first threat of a score. A break by the Girling number 8 from a scrum on halfway made it all the way to the Magor tryline but a try saving tackle from the Magor 10, Iestyn Rollings, kept the scores at nil all.

The lack of game time was evident in the opening quarter from the Magor boys, plenty of dropped balls. One saving grace was that the Magor scrum was definitely on top. The deadlock was broken after about 18 minutes though when Magor were awarded a kickable penalty in front of the Girling posts. The penalty was slotted over by number 12 Ellis Wainwright.

Girling struck right back though with a try under the posts which was converted. Girling 7 – 3 Magor. After the barren first quarter, the scores came thick and fast with Magor kicking another penalty to pull back to within a point.

Again, the next score came hot on the heels of the last and this time it was Girling who went over on the left wing. The tough touchline kick was missed but Girling were now edging ahead with a 12 – 6 lead. Magor needed a score and the score came from another dominant scrum that went straight to the backs with number 15 Aaron Boardman taking the spoils. The conversion was missed meaning Girling stayed in the lead by a single point.

Next came the first card of the game, awarded to number 8 Lee Cox, who had been everywhere up to that point, for a high tackle that actually might have been a case of mistaken identity. Girling took the opportunity of the three points that came with the card to stretch their lead to 15 – 11. The restart was a kick that maybe Iestyn Rollings won’t be watching back and allowed Girling to have one more first half attack but it came to nothing. Half time score Girling 15 – 11 Magor.

The second half started with Girling able to stretch even further ahead from a penalty but, like the first half, this was the only score in the first quarter of the second half.

Girling were pressing again but the ball was lost in a tackle and loosehead prop Iwan White picked up and released the backline. Late replacement Ryan Bedborough, Simon Reece and Ellis Wainwright linking well to ultimately release Iestyn Rolling who raced in from the halfway line for the try, the conversion from Ryan Bedborough bringing the scores level at 18 each.

Girling, though, kept pressing and took the lead from a penalty once again. The referee kept up the Christmas spirit with the second yellow card of the game and, unfortunately, the second yellow card for Lee Cox who was adjudged to have entered the ruck from the side. Lee had in fact injured his knee in the encounter and was carried off after a period of treatment. Like Rudolph’s nose the second yellow meant the card was red.

So trailing by three and a man down, Magor needed some kind of miracle, Christmas or otherwise. This came in the form of replacement right wing Tom Waters. The Magor 8 who were now down to 7 continued to be on top and drove the ball from a line out releasing the backs. After some nifty juggling, Iestyn Rollings passed to Aaron Boardman who timed his pass to perfection to put Tom in for the try. Ryan Bedborough got the extras to give Magor a slender lead.

Girling were not done yet though and managed to make the extra man count by creating a three man overlap to cross for a converted try and to take the lead again with just 5 or 6 minutes still to play, Girling 28 – 25 Magor.

How would this encounter end, well this is where the final card of the day popped up, the get out of jail card, masterfully played by Magor. The sense of urgency led to Magor’s best spell of play of the game. An innovative grubber kick from Rollings to restart was gathered by Ellis Wainwright and three replacements, Josh Buffery, Ryan Bedborough and Aeddan Erasmus kept the momentum going right up to the Girling 22. A penalty ensued and Magor kicked to touch with the clock in the red hitting the 5m line. From the subsequent lineout, the Magor forwards drove on and player/coach Chris Doddridge spun off the left of the maul to drop down for the try. The last kick of the game failed to convert and the game finished Girling 28 – 30 Magor.

This was a hard fought victory and Girling made it difficult right to the end but the day ended with a bonus point win for the Magor boys who rise to joint top in Division 6 East, a nice early Christmas present. Next week we go up against local rivals St. Julian’s High School Old Boys and hopefully we can finish 2025 on a high.
